I know this firsthand. In the summer of 2023, I was laid off and spent several months struggling to find work. During that time, I experienced anxiety, self-doubt, and depression. It felt like every rejection or unanswered job application chipped away at my confidence. Uncertainty about the future can create overwhelming stress. Questions like “How will I pay my bills?” or “Will I find another job soon?” can keep you up at night.

3. Sadness and Depression

Losing a job can bring feelings of grief, loneliness, or worthlessness. If your self-esteem was tied to your work, a layoff can shake your sense of purpose and identity. I personally struggled with feelings of failure and self-doubt, wondering if I was good enough to land another job.

  • Sleep Disturbances – Racing thoughts or heightened stress can lead to insomnia or excessive sleeping.

  • Physical Symptoms – Headaches, fatigue, and even digestive issues may emerge due to heightened stress levels.


Coping Strategies for Resilience

While dealing with depression and uncertainty, I found these strategies crucial in helping me regain control of my mental health and career:

1. Allow Yourself to Grieve

Losing a job is a significant loss, and it’s okay to feel emotional. I gave myself permission to feel upset, but I also reminded myself that this was not the end of my career—it was a transition.
